What We Do
Health and Safety Management
Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) provides valuable service in the following areas:
- Academic Safety Management
- Industrial Hygiene Management
- Occupational Safety & Health Management
- Training Programs
In addition, Health and Safety oversees the environmental, health, and safety programs for the university, conducts safety risk assessments, incident investigations, and is the primary interface with government regulatory agencies such as CDC, DAQ, DEQ, DHS, DOT, EPA, FMCSA, OSHA, NFPA, NRC, and RCRA.
Environmental Management
Environmental Management helps ensure campus compliance to Environmental State and Federal rules and regulations by:
- Properly removing, storing, and disposing of unwanted laboratory materials (ex: hazardous waste), such as chemicals, biological, solid, and universal waste.
- Inspecting and reporting on all petroleum containing equipment, to prevent leaks and/or spill from entering sewer and/or storm water drains.
- Following all requirements for the campus air quality permit by performing record keeping of all large campus emission sources and then reporting those emissions to the State.
- Cleaning small chemical spills on campus and working with outside agencies on larger spills.
- Calculating and submitting various annual reports, such as Greenhouse Gases, Sulfur Dioxide, and Tier Two (or Right-to-Know).
Emergency Management
Emergency Management strives to protect the BYU community by:
- Encourage community preparedness by providing emergency resources and trainings.
- Establishing, maintaining, and updating Emergency Plans.
- Manage and facilitate the university Incident Management Team.
- Supplying and maintaining university AEDs and Bleeding Control Kits.
In addition to these responsibilities, Emergency Management also works closely with other BYU departments and outside agencies to facilitate preparedness and effective communication in the event of an emergency.
Fire Safety
Fire Safety Management provides valuable service in the following areas:
- Fire and life safety code interpretation, inspection and enforcement on new and existing buildings on campus.
- Fire extinguisher inspection, maintenance and training
- Inspect and report deficiencies on fire hydrants, PIV’s (Post Indicator Valves), FDC’s (Fire Department Connections) and fire sprinkler valves.
- Help investigate fires on campus
- Help with special events needing fire coverage
- Work with the local fire department in preplanning and implementing training opportunities on campus
- Oversee and track the progress with campus fire drills, red tag permits and hot work permits
Risk Management
Risk Management provides valuable service in five main areas:
- Minor Protection Program
- Incident and Claims Management
- Contract Review
- Insurance Management
- Event Approval
In addition, Risk Management conducts risk assessments, drone permit review and approval, policy development, and overall consultation in contractual risk transfer (including release of liability waiver creation).
