Evacuation Drill Schedules

These buildings are required to conduct fire/evacuation drills on the following schedules:

Quarterly (4 times per year):

The fire drill coordinator will:

  1. Decide a date and time to conduct the drill. Drills shall be conducted at different times of the day from year to year and when quarterly drills are required, from quarter to quarter.
  2. Contact the BYU Electrical Shop (2-5533) to schedule the drill. The Electric Shop will activate the fire alarm when the drill takes place.
  3. Contact the BYU Fire Marshal (2-6880) to inform him of the date and time of the drill.
  4. Assign members of your staff to act as evaluators (at least one per exit door).
  5. Inform faculty and staff of the scheduled date and time for the drill. (Drills are to be used as learning and training experience. Faculty and Staff should review the drill procedures prior to the drill.)
  6. Reconfirm with the Electrical Shop in the morning, on the day of the drill.
  7. Obtain and print the Record of Evacuation Drill form at the top of this page.

Conducting the drill:

  1. Evaluators will take their positions at the exits prior to the drill.
  2. The fire drill coordinator will meet at the fire alarm panel with the Electrical Shop.
  3. The Electrical Shop will activate the building fire alarm.
  4. Evacuation of the building will begin according to the building’s emergency plan.
  5. Evaluators will record:
    1. The number of people exiting through their exit.
    2. The time that the last person left the building.
    3. Any problems observed during the evacuation.
  6. When sufficient time has elapsed to allow for evacuation of the building, the Electrical Shop will silence and reset the alarm.
  7. When the “all clear” is given by the fire drill coordinator, occupants may re-enter the building. (In a real situation, the “all clear” will be given by someone with authority. IE: Fire Officer, Police Officer, Electric Shop.

Post drill:

  1. The fire drill coordinator and evaluators will assemble together to exchange information.
  2. The fire drill coordinator will complete the online Evacuation Drill form. (Online Form)
  3. If problems were observed, the fire drill coordinator will suggest and implement ways to correct them. Risk Management can be a resource in finding and implementing solutions.
  4. Risk Management will electronically file a copy of the evacuation drill report.
