Fire Extinguishers
How do I properly use a Fire Extinguisher?
Where can I find Fire Extinguishers on campus?
Most areas require that there be a fire extinguisher within 75 feet of any given place in a building, unless there is an unusual fire danger. Some special hazards (cooking areas, highly flammable materials, etc.) require that there be an extinguisher closer.
What types of Extinguishers might I see on campus?
Most extinguishers can be distinguished by color:
Almost all extinguishers found on campus are suitable for a fire that is burning typical combustible materials (paper, wood, cloth, etc). These are red. (classification ABC)
In the science buildings, there are large yellow extinguishers that are specifically for extinguishing fire that involve a combustible metals (magnesium, potassium, etc).
In all commercial kitchens that cook with oil, there should be a silver extinguisher used for grease fires. These are filled with a soap-like foam that is specific to cooking fires.
When to use a Fire Extinguisher
- If you feel you can safely approach a fire with an extinguisher, then it is appropriate to do so.
- If after depleting one extinguisher the fire is not out or controlled, exit the area and close any doors if possible.
- If you can feel the heat strongly, or don’t feel comfortable using an extinguisher, exit the area, closing any doors if possible, and call 911.
- If in doubt, call 911 and get out safely!
- Report any fire to your supervisor, RA, or to the campus Fire Marshal
