Vehicle Accidents

I’ve been in an accident involving a BYU vehicle, what do I do now?

If you or someone has been injured, call 911 regardless of the extent of the injury.

If property or auto body damage only, call BYU Police at 801-422-2222.

Take photos of both vehicles (or all vehicles if more are involved). Please take photos of all 4 quarter panels of each vehicle, and include photos of license plates. Also, obtain photos of the accident site. Photos can be taken with a smart phone and forwarded to incident_mgmt@byu.edu. Please reference the accident by name of the driver and date of incident.

Cooperate with BYU, or any other police department, and provide all known information.

DO NOT ADMIT TO LIABILITY OR TELL THIRD PARTIES “BYU WILL TAKE CARE OF IT.”

At your earliest possible opportunity, but no later than 72 hours, log into the incident.byu.edu website and complete and submit the Driver’s Incident Report found in the Automobile Accidents tab.

Be sure to notify your supervisor of the incident.

* Vehicle accidents are reviewed by the Vehicle Accident Review Committee (VARC). The VARC may assign defensive driving training for those involved.

Call the Risk Management and Safety Department with any questions at 801-422-4468.
