The Great Utah ShakeOut
Utah is home to over 200 active faults, which means at least 80% of Utah residents live in or near an earthquake zone. Are you ready for the next big quake? Here's how you can prepare.
Did you know that BYU campus sits right next to one of the largest and most active normal faults in the world? The Wasatch fault stretches from the southern Idaho border to south of Nephi, UT. According to extensive studies on past Utah geological activity, we are overdue for a large quake by about 50 years. Scientists have said that it’s not a matter of if, but when the “big one” will happen. The best way to mitigate this risk is to be prepared.
This April, the state of Utah will participate in the annual nationwide “ShakeOut”. This is a drill to help everyone know what to do in the event an earthquake hits your area. You can register at their website whether you would like to participate at work, school, home, with friends, or by yourself.
