Returning Back to Campus Safely

Recommendations to help you safely return to the campus work environment

Use your best judgement as you return to campus from a remote work environment.

For any questions contact Risk Management and Safety: 801-422-4468.

BYU has developed a three phased approached regarding COVID-19 Safety and we are currently in phase two. This means that after working remotely for some time, many employees are in the process of coming back to campus. This includes moving office equipment and adjusting workspaces. As you begin this process, here are some safety tips to consider:

Safe Lifting and Ergonomics:

  • When lifting heavy or oddly shaped objects use appropriate lifting equipment such as hand trucks, dollies, carts, and other devices to safely transport materials to your work area.
  • Watch BYU’s ergonomic safety training materials to better understand proper lifting techniques and how to create an ergonomically safe office space (BYU's Office Ergonomics Course).
  • Ask for help. We recommend “team lifting” materials with someone else instead of lifting heavy objects or materials on your own.
  • Help prevent potential musculoskeletal injuries by ensuring your office area is setup ergonomically correct.
  • For additional ergonomic recommendations, please refer to BYU's ergonomics program or reach out to the Risk Management and Safety department for additional Support at 801-422-4468.

General Safety:

  • Ensure that your area floors are clear and free of hazards.
  • Walkways, aisles, and doorways are unobstructed.
  • Know and understand your building emergency procedures and evacuation protocols.
  • Ensure equipment is working properly and up-to-date on appropriate maintenance specifications.
  • If you identify a safety concern, please report it to your supervisor and feel free to reach out to Risk Management and Safety for support.

Training:

  • Quality safety training programs give our employees an opportunity to better understand the work hazards around them and are critical to preventing injuries and illness in our work spaces.
  • Ensure you and your team’s safety training is up to date. Also, make certain that you know all the new safe work procedures, equipment, and processes that have been implemented in your work areas.
