Asbestos Online Database Tutorial

As the evaluation of suspect asbestos containing material is an ongoing process due to regulations and that the use of asbestos containing material has not been completely banned in the United States, this database will continue to grow as we assess current and future buildings and structures. This database is now a web accessed database which allows us to update it as soon as sample analysis results are received. This helps us provide the information in a timely fashion to our internal customers at BYU. If you know of someone who needs access to the database and is not on the current list of database users, please contact the Industrial Hygienist (422-2943).

WARNING! This database does not include assessments of all building materials.

Suspect asbestos containing material assessment is done by identifying groups of materials in a building, and then taking a representative number of samples for that material. The analysis for those samples determines the asbestos content of that material group for the entire building or structure.

SAMPLE COLLECTION is an important part of material assessment and should only be conducted by BYU employees or hired consultants who have at least a current "Asbestos Inspector" designation through the Utah Department of Environmental Quality. Sample collection of some materials has the potential to generate airborne asbestos fibers. This could create an inhalation hazard and contaminating immediate areas and areas where samples are taken (vehicles, offices, etc.). Incorrect sample collection can significantly impact sample analysis and results.

If you know of suspect material that is not in this database and needs to be tested, please contact the Industrial Hygienist (422-2943) or Don Hunt (422-2789) of the Risk Management and Safety Department (422-4468) or Craig Barrus, BYU Asbestos Coordinator (422-5434), for collection and analysis. REMEMBER: ONLY QUALIFIED BYU EMPLOYEES OR CONTRACTORS ARE AUTHORIZED TO COLLECT MATERIAL SAMPLES FOR ASBESTOS ANALYSIS.

TRAINING: General asbestos awareness training is available on BYU’s online Training LMS. To access this system, log in to your BYU account and search for the Training folder within the work folder (the work folder is located on the left side of the page) or use the following web address: http://training.byu.edu/. The Asbestos Awareness training module is located within the Physical Facilities Catalog. For other training needs and questions please contact: Craig Barrus (422-5434), Industrial Hygienist (422-2943), or Don Hunt (422-2789).

Example of how to do a search for 'HFAC E201':

Click the down arrow next to the "Choose a building" box to open a menu of the list of buildings:

Scroll down the list of buildings until you find 'HFAC HARRIS (FRANKLIN S) FINE ARTS CENTER' and select it. The database will now be limited to show only assesments performed in the HFAC. You can then sort by room number to aid in your search. To do so, hover over the column title 'Room Number'. Click the drop down arrow on the right and choose "Sort Ascending" to sort the rooms from A to Z.

You can now search for the room 'E201'in the Room Number column. Once this entry is selected, you can look to the right of the row to see if the column titled 'ACM' (Asbestos Containing Material) has a Y or N to see if it contains asbestos containing material. Scroll to the top and click 'Layer Descriptions' to view if there are multiple layers involved in the sample.

To be able to view all buildings again, select 'Show All Building' at the top of the database.

The following is an example of a flooring sample with multiple layers (Heritage Halls, Felt Hall, Room 36):

HOW TOs:

-To sort by a specific column:
  • Hover over column title, click drop down arrow on far right and choose "Sort Ascending" or "Sort Descending." Or click the column title to change the sorting order.
-To change page:
  • Click to go forward or backward one page. Click to go to the first or last page of the database.
-To view a specific building:
  • Use the drop down box next to "Choose a building:" to choose a specific building from a list. Here you can also type in the name of a building to search for, but it must be the abbreviation for the building, i.e., type in 'BNSN' for the Benson Building.

-To print:
  • Click to view a printable version of the form. On the next page, click 'print' to print the document. Click 'close' to return to database.
-Click to have access to all the buildings listed on database after doing a search.

-After having a specific entry highlighted, click to view different layers of material that were inspected for the selected sample.

Click to refresh the page.

Explanations:

ACM: Asbestos Containing Material
If Y, then the sample contains asbestos material.
If N, then the sample does not contain asbestos material.
